  1. I think $2000 is enough.

This is a bit confusing. You said you would visit Japan in next summer. But at the same time, you are asking what time of the year is the best time.

Anyway, if you choose from the entire year, the end of March and the beginning of April is the best time because you can see cherry blossoms blooming.

If you visit Japan in summer, you can go to festivals. See detail in the below page.

  2. If you just want to eat decently meals will cost on average about 10 bucks a meal. When I went we had very light breakfasts (<5 dollars) and normal lunches an dinners. So I guess about 40 dollars a day for food per person. I ended up spending about 300 dollars on souvenirs, but that's me. I would say about 100 bucks overall for souvenirs is good. The thing with me is that I loved a lot of the little knick-knacks they had so I couldn't resist and I spent a lot on gifts for friends. Do you plan on traveling all over Japan? The airbase is near Tokyo right? If you plan on only staying in Tokyo, I suggest you should buy an unlimited bus pass within Tokyo. If you plan to travel around Japan, I suggest you get the JR pass which costs about 300 bucks but grants you unlimited access to the JR lines and the bullet trains throughout Japan. It is very cost efficient because it basically pays for yourself if you plan on visiting places such as Hiroshima/Kyoto.

I think best time to go to Japan is during the spring or fall. I went early summer and the humidity was extremely unbearable already. I can't imagine how it is mid summer with hot weather and high humidity. I hear winter gets a bit cold and snows in some places.

As earlier stated, I spent about 300 dollars on souvenirs alone. I had relatives with me who paid for hotel and food. My brother (the one who took up most of the food costs) spent about 1500 dollars overall for food+souvenirs (clothes and toys mainly). I stayed there for a week in Tokyo. The hotel was a Courtyard Marriott situated near the Ginza shopping center between the Yurakcho and Shimbashi stops. We made day trips out to Kyoto and Osaka where we visited castles and temples. We also went to Kamakura which is a town full of temples and a giant buddha. Within Tokyo, we visited all the main neighborhoods (Akihabara, Harajuku, Shibuya, Shinjuku). We also went to the Studio Ghibli museum.

Japan is very safe. Kids ride the subways by themselves. There are vending machines everywhere mostly for drinks and cigarettes even though there are others that sell food, items, and used panties (not an extensive list). People don't lock their bikes on the street so it might seem a little strange at first. The portions at American places in Japan (Denny's/Starbucks) are smaller than their American counterparts. The people are very nice and polite. All the workers in the store greet you when you first come in and are extremely helpful.

Um... yeah overall great experience and I hope you enjoy your stay there :)
