How do i play video files that end with .mkv on them?

I just downloaded a lot of videos from torrent they are anime and its a file that ends with .mkv please tell me how to play the files!! thanks

  1. mkv files are matroska files which are a container format.

    They hold multiple streams of audio, video, and subtitle information, each requiring their own codec to decode.

    You need:

    a matroska splitter program (written in to some programs, if not you need the stand alone splitter and a compatible media player)

    the appropriate codec installed for each separate stream, divx, vxid, mpeg2, mp3, ac3, etc...

    think of it as a larger envelope containing smaller envelopes, which each contain a letter in a different code. you need something to open the big envelope, but even after that you need to be able to read the messages inside each individual envelopes.
