I am trying to test into calculus and I have untill August 16th to take my test. Anyone know what's on the assesment test all the way up to calculus? Is it hard to test into calculus?

  1. Unless what you're going into doesn't require math, I suggest that you take the test blind -- if you're ready for calculus, you'll get into it. If not, then you need some more preparation (i.e. classes).

I know how you're feeling. I had virtually NO pre-calculus, and took AP Calculus in my senior year of high school. Looking back, maybe I shouldn't have jumped ahead so readily. I'm considering a Neuroscience B.S. (it's just a preparation for medical school) and I want to take as much math as I can -- because math is fun!

However, I think I might have to take a data/graphs/and functions course my 1st semester, and THEN Calculus I in my 2nd semester.

So, just be realistic about your abilities and preparedness. Just be placed where you should be. Maybe take some summer math courses in the future, and you'll end up even better off because of your solid preparation, should you need it :)

  2. You need to know the material very throughly.  It isn't enough to just have a general understanding.  That means you need to practice a lot.  Quality of practice is more important than quantity though both are important.

You have a book with problems and a solutions manual right? Well take your time with problems and if it is right move on.  If it was not right take all the time you need to understand what you did wrong - spending a lot of time on one problem can save tons of time in the long run.

Master the basics, make sure you know algebra.

(Memorizing a bunch of stuff probably won't work.. there may be some memorizing but your time will be best put into understanding instead of rote memorizing.)

Is it hard? Well good luck! :)
