  1. When you hit print and the box pops up if you go to "properties" then hit the color tab. Select "print in grayscale" then "black cartiridge only" from the drop down.

  2. I may be wrong with your model but most of the Canon Pixma printers will only print b&w when greyscale box is ticked and set as default in the setting menu - this is because most Pixma's do not use a black ink cartridge they 'make up' black from the colour cartridges which is one of the few (and expensive) drawbacks when using these printers for anything other than colour printing or photograph printing as the cartridges as you may already know are very expensive..

ADD: Click a page to print - when print box opens select 'Properties' next box is tabbed select 'Print Advisor Button'

When next box opens select "Fast Print all black text"

    Click 'Next'

Select "Media Type" (plain paper/envelope etc)

    Click 'Next'

    Click 'Finish'

    Click 'OK'

    This is for my Pixma

  3. 1.  Just because it has 2 seperate cartridges does not mean it doesn't use "color" to make black.  A lot of printers are doing that today to keep the color from drying out when not in use.

    2.  This is a line from your printer manual:

Color ink consumption may occur even when black-and-white or grayscale printing is specified.  (page 78)

  4. That isn't an option with your printer.

It will print with an empty colour cartridge, however you will see a decline in quality.

You cannot print in black only with most new printers.
