  1. If you mean page headers (and footers), just press F16 which will open the Stylist. If you prefer it, drag the Stylist over to the right side of the window so it docks there. That is what I prefer.

Click on the fourth icon on the bar at the top of the Stylist. That is the Page style icon. The name of your current page style (the style of the page where the cursor is), should be highlighted. Right click on that style, it will probably be the one named “Default'', and then click on “Modify” which will bring up the current attributes of that page style. To add or change a page header, select the “Header” tab. Use this to set the size of the page header for that page style and whether you want the same header on the left-hand page and the right-hand page.

Your header should now appears empty at the top of the page in the main page windows and on the top of any page in that page style. Just place your cursor in the header and type whatever you want in it, using whatever fonts and font size you want. You can also place a page number there that updates automatically. Just place your cursor in the header where you want the page number to appear, and then from the main menu select Insert → Fields → Page Number. You can move, copy, and paste the Page Number field, just like a character.

You may not want a page header on the first page of your document. If, not, and if one is appearing there, place your cursor on that page, and then in the Stylist double click on the “First Page” page style. Since you haven’t turned on the header in that style, no header will show.

If you have made other changes in your “Default Style” you will probably have to edit the “First Page” style so that it matches, except in the matter of the header. Or you can go to the “Default” page style, right click on it, and select “New". Name this new page style something like “Page_1”. Turn off its header. Set your cursor in the middle of the first page of your document and double-click on the “Page_1” page style.

Don’t be afraid to make changes in your styles. Any changes you make will only affect the current document.

If you are talking about section headers, including a main header, then you just type the header or heading into your text in the default font. Then you apply a style using the paragraph styles available under the first icon on the bar at the top of the Stylist.

OpenOffice.org Writer has a large number of built-in paragraph styles, and you can create your own as well. The built-in styles correspond closely to those built into other applications like HTML cascading style sheets, LaTeX, Microsoft Word, and various desktop publishing programs. The largest header in your document will normally have the style named “Heading 1”. So select the text you want to appear in that heading and double-click on “Heading 1”. Do the same with other headers or headings. You can then edit the paragraph styles to made the headings appear the way you  want them to, for example, setting a particular font, a particular font size, centering, and so forth.

To make the Stylist disappear when you are temporarily finished with it, press F11 again.

Please do use the Help provided and the documentation at http://documentation.openoffice.org/manu... which will provide a lot of answers to questions which will arise about OpenOffice.org.
