  1. You should be using the layers pallet with at least two layers, 'drawing' and 'color'.

Open the layers pallet (Window> Layers).  It will show a little picture of your drawing with a name next to it, most likely 'Background' and a little lock icon on it.  Double click the layer to open and unlock it and rename it 'colors'.

Then open your original drawing in another window, hit ctrl+a (or go to Select> Select All) and click-hold and drag it to your other window with the colored art.  Put it in the center of the page (this will hide your colored art) and go to your layer pallette click the drop-down that says 'Normal' and switch it to 'Multiply' this makes the whites disappear and your colors will show through.

If your lines look fuzzy use your arrow keys to bump it until they lay exactly in line.  Go to Layers> Flatten Image and the two separate layers will compress into one, called 'Background' (again with the lock icon) then save your file.

Ideally, you would have created these two layers before you actually started coloring, but as this is your first try it's okay if it's not perfect.  Then do yourself a favor and get on deviantART and search 'Photoshop Tutorials' or Google, Yahoo!, or YouTube 'Photoshop Tutorials' and learn some super-useful tips and tricks for coloring your art.
