all of the labels are gone off it. but it is very lightwaight and has campagnolo parts so it is a good one but how to tell if it is a reynolds 531 frame etc. it is much lighter then my 77 raleigh grand prix and probably from the early 80s or late 70s. the guy that owned was a triathlon compete and won alot he used this bike for it. how much is it worth. it needs new tires and adjusment.

  1. Hm. Trek never used Campagnolo dropouts on any of their bikes. They were either Trek branded or Bocama. If the bike is that old it would have been a lugged frame, and I think that ALL Treks had a seat tube cluster that had the Trek name cast into it. In fact I am absolutely sure of it.

To my recollection, the best grade of Reynolds that Trek used was 501 which is straight gauge Chrome Moly. They MIGHT have used 531 for the main frame on some of their bikes when they first started but I don't remember it. To see if the frame is Reynolds, turn the bike upside down and look at the underside of the top tube. Reynolds tubing has their name stamped on it but it may be hard to see.

Also, the "stickers" on Treks were always placed under the clear coat- you couldn't peel them off.

Can you provide a side view picture of the bike- drive side with all the components showing? Maybe we can help unravel the mystery.

  2. I think the archives on Treks website only go back a few years.  Trek hasn't sold a bike with Campy stuff stock since the 1980's and they haven't sold any steel bikes except for the 400 and 520 since 1990 (or earlier).  Neither of those bikes had Campy parts.  My best advice would be to find a Trek dealer who has been around for a while (at least 25 years) and talk to someone there.

  3. Go onto treks website, and check their archives.
