  1. You won't really be able to do this properly without laying out hard cash (or spending somebody else's!). For this kind of stuff you need a good screen recorder. I do a lot of this, and I use what I consider to be the best application available - Camtasia Studio from Techsmith. It will record everything you see and hear on the computer screen and save it to any common video format - including AVI or MPEG2, MPEG4, etc.

It costs a lot of money, but the latest version (5) is available as a free trial download for 30 days with no limit on use. It's very good and is used by loads of computer training specialists. I use it to record Flash video streams online in order to reversion for iPod, iPhone etc., and quality is as good as the original.

If you save as AVI files you can then author them to DVD within the program itself or by a 3rd party app.

  2. to record game footage you just need your TV, the RECORDER and your choice of CONSOLE

the output from your Console gets plugged into the Input of your Recorder

and the output of your Recorder into the input of your TV

But if you want to record onto the PC directly, It can be done with an extra piece of kit - there are a few different things that will do it.

But if you want to just record, you don't need the PC
