How do i register a business name so no one else can use it? In the UK?

I will only have a small turnover so do not need to be VAT registered.

is there a way of copyrighting the name or something similar?

  1. When you apply to register a business name, it will be checked against a data base of names to ensure that it is not already being used. Once it is registered then nobody else will be able to register that name. This does not mean that somebody cannot use it. It only means that they cannot use it legally.  


  2. There is no register of business names in the UK. The only way to get a unique name is to start a limited company.

  3. Fengirl has the answer. The Registry of Business Names in the UK closed about thirty years ago so the only secure way of protecting your name is to form a limited company. This will also entitle you to have exclusive use of the .ltd.uk domain name.

  4. Why not visit an attorney?

    They will be able to assist you properly. They will register your business name and do not ask a big fee for doing that. To register a business name, takes a lot of your time which you can spend on improving your business and making money.
