  1. There are several ways to remove a hook from a fish but it all depends on where the hook is.

    1) if the fish is lip hooked and you're able to grab and hold the fish with one hand, use the other hand to push the hook out .

    2) if the hook is inside the mouth, but near the lips, needle nose pliers or a hook removal tool will do the job.

    3) If the hook is deeper in the mouth and you feel that the needle nose or hook removal tool won't work, or if the fish is slightly bleeding, cut the line and simply release the fish. ( Don't worry, the fish's biology will actually push the hook out itself within  2-3 days and the survival of the fish is greatly enhanced without further injury through the use of tools.)

    4) If you plan on keeping the catch and just want to get your gear back, dispatch the fish quickly and cut open the fish from the gills forward and unhook it. Sorry, it's a bit nasty but if you are planning on keeping it...

    That's about it.~good luck catchin'.

  2. plyers.  i'm not sure what they are called but mine have a spring on them and they are bent so your hand doesn't get anywhere near the mouth.  They're great!

  3. I keep needlenose pliers on hand for fluke and blues, a store-bought hook disgorger based on pliers is even better.

  4. You are better off removing the hook from the fluke. First, you need to let the fish stop flapping around and calm down. Then you get a firm grasp on the fish just below the gill plates. If you grab the fluke around the midsection it's gonna start flapping all over the place and most likely outta your hand. Use a pair of needle nose pliers or a hook removal tool and remove the hook. Be careful, fluke have very sharp teeth! Tight lines.
