How do i remove the smell from new rubber?

I use a catapult for fishing and have just bought a new one. Unfortunately the handle is rubber and it smells very strongly. I don't want this smell on my hands as it may taint the bait so how do I remove the smell... is it just a matter of time?

let it out and put it under the sun to remove the smell.

I had something with this problem so I just put it outside and let it air out and it really helped.
