How do i repaint my acoustic guitar?

Question

I would like to repaint my guitar too look vintage, and it is polished so do i have to scrape it off, then paint over it? and should i use spray paint? and what type of paint should i buy? its a project im working on.

dude i would really hate to see you take a perfectly good guitar and try to make it look "vintage"  can't you just save up and buy a nice older guitar. please don't spray paint it, im begging you.

There is alot of detail that goes into painting a guitar. For one thing its wood so you have to approach it differently than if you were painting PVC or Aluminum. You also have to use special paint that sticks to wood. You also have to make sure that you don't get any on the inside to mess up your wiring and pickups. There are books you can buy that show you how to do this but I would personally give it to somebody who knows how to do it.

If you never done a paint job before your going to mess your guitar up  99%, You'll break a string or when your removing a part you will remove it wrong.Contact a worker at your local guitar shop

you really shouldn't try and paint it. having the paint on it will effect the tone that the guitar can produce. it will pretty much become a display piece if you do.

First let me say that I do not recommend that you attempt this on your own if you have no prior experience in woodwork.

Acoustics are typically a little harder to work on because there is probably binding going around the edges.  I don't think its 'paint that you should use to get that vintage look, you're going to want to look int wood stain.  The glossy finish that you see on top of the guitar is just clear paint that has been buffed out, so to get rid of it (since you can't stain on top of it) you're best bet would be to carefully sand it down.  Although like I said you're going to have to be real careful and if you want to do it right it might end up being a lot more work than you originally thought.
