Question:

How do i replace my headphone jack plug?

i already got a replacement plug and cut the wires, but i found out tjat there are 4 small wires in the 2 black chords, and they also have some sort of linen inside them. How do i solder the headphone end with the new plug end?

  1. I *hate* soldering those kind of wires.

    This is what works for me:

    Strip back about 1/2" more than you need so you have at least 1" of bare copper (with the nylon/rayon/linen c**p woven in between the strands).  Be super careful not to break any strands, because there aren't enough of them, as it is.

    Tin the whole length of bare copper.  Just let the end of the wire sit on the soldering iron tip and feed solder in at the insulation end (1" away from the soldering iron tip).  This will keep the insulation from melting too much.  If you can't get enough heat to flow 1" away, then try feeding solder in at 1/2" in the middle of the bare copper.  One way or another, tin the whole 1".   In the process of tinning the wire, the linen stuff in the middle should also melt away (most of the time anyway).

    NOW, you have something to work with when soldering that wire to a solder lug on the connector.

    Good luck!  Like I said -- it's a pain in the butt.
