How do i responsibly dispose of batteries?

I'm aware that sitting in a landfill is not an ideal option, and i feel guilty putting them in the garbage. Is there any alternative way to get rid of them?

It depends. If they are regular, AA (or AAA, C, or D)-type alkaline batteries than absolutely no harm is done by putting them in a landfill. However, if they are rechargeable, or have lithium, cadmium, or mercury, you should find a local recycling center. Some electronics stores also collect them.

Throw them in the nearest body of water.

Radio Shack and Batteries Plus stores will take them back I think.  You may want to call them first and they may only take rechargables and lithium.
