  1. Consult a professional

Electricity is nothing to fool around with!

  2. For an air conditioner you can run a cable from a plug nearby and use plastic trucking to fit it in. If you want to run it from the breaker box you need to add a breaker connect power to the top of it. This would be with it off and after you test it with a multimeter. For 220 you van test with the multimeter before you switch off. Then you get a cable that is in accordance with the electrical regulations in your area and then connect the red wire to the breaker and the black to the neutral then run the cable to the airconditioner and fit a 5 amp plug top box or those boxes where you wire the air conditioner straight in. You can get advice from the electrical wholesalers as well.

  3. Your main panel or sub-panel needs to have three insulated wires inside it, plus a ground.

The white wire is a neutral, and all whites should connect at the same bus bar (a series of set screws on a bar).  The bare (or sometimes green) wires all connect to a different bus bar.

The colored wires, usually black or red, all connect to a circuit breaker.  The breakers all connect to live tabs in the center of the panel.  This where all the electricity originates.

You'll need a double breaker that connects to each of the two different tabs in the center.  The breaker is made so both sides will trip if there is a problem with either of them.

These breakers should have 220-240 volts across them.  The white wire is not necessary, but the copper ground is also usually run.

You need 10 ga copper wire for 30 amps, 8 ga for 40-50 and 6 ga for 60, assuming the runs are short, say 30 to 40 feet.

It is too difficult to accurately explain every detail in advance without the specific details, but this should give you a start.

  4. Look at your Main breaker.

If it's two poles, then you've got 240V.

Look for blank spaces in your panel.

    You need two adjacent ones.

If you've got them you've got room for the new circuit.

Then call the electrician. There's too much you've

got to know to do it right for me to tell you about it here.

If you insist on doing it yourself, look for a book on

home wiring by McPartland, and do your homework

    before starting.
