  1. When you left click the "Download Spreadsheet" link at the bottom of a Yahoo portfolio, a File Download box pops up with options to "Open", "Save", or "Cancel".  At this point you have 2 choices for saving the file:

    1.  If you choose "Open" the .csv (comma separated values) file is opened in a browser window as a spreadsheet.  Use the menu File - Save As - then change the "Save as type" to Microsoft Excel workbook (.xls).  Be careful to change the folder to somewhere on your computer where you can find the file (on the desktop or under My Documents).  The default folder will be buried deep inside the cache folder for your browser.

The end result will be a .xls file in the folder of your choice.  This spreadsheet file will be exactly as was displayed in your browser window.  (note that an Excel spreadsheet file in your browser window behaves somewhat differently than the same file opened directly from Excel)

    2.  If you choose "Save" (back at the File download box remember!), a "Save As" box will open for you to save the .csv file as a Microsoft Excel Worksheet.  The default folder will either be the desktop or within My Documents (less confusing that option #1 default folder above!).  The end result should be a .csv file in the folder of your choice that you will be able to open with Excel (just remember that the file is considered "text type" when using the Excel File Open menu).

Another Option:  At the beginning of this process, if you right click the "Download Spreadsheet" link at the bottom of a Yahoo portfolio, the pop-up menu in IE has a option to "Save target as".  This choice is similar to #2 above in allowing you to save the .csv file in a folder of your choice, which can later be opened by Excel as a "text type" file.
