How do i say "photo exchange" in Japanese?(or "exchanging photos"..doesn't matter)

I think it would be better to use the expression

"shashin koukan" （写真交換）.

The word "shashin" means "picture/photo".

The word "koukan" means "exchange". It is a noun but can be turned into a verb by addind "suru" as in "koukan suru".

The "hikikaeru" does also mean "exchange", but the nuance is slight different. Most people would use "hikikaeru" for things like "exchanging winning tickets for prizes", "exchanging a check for money", etc., etc.

Japanese people don't really use "hikikaeru" for things like "exchanging gifts". The word "koukan" is more commonly used in case like that.

So, if you're talking about "exchanging photos with someone (like a friend)" then you should probably say "shashin koukan". The expression "shashin hikikaeru" will sound awkward and unnatural in that kind of situation.

Exchange= hikikaeru

Shashin wo hikikaeru <casual>

写真を引き換える。

Shashin wo hikiaemasu. <polite>

写真を引き換えます。

Note: hikikaeru is not like kaeru.  Hikikaeru is a ru verb, not a u verb.

if you simply mean to exchange as in to give and then immediately recieve something new, that would be

shashin o kaeru (the verb "to exchange") [sha sheen oh, kah ay roo]

shashin o kaerimasu (the act of exchanging) [ kah ay ree mah ss] <no final u sound>.
