How do i secretly record telephone conversations to catch a scammer?

I am being scammed by a company trying to tell me that I owe a debt that I have verified with the company I supposedly owe, that I really do not owe. I have been advised to record the conversations. I need to know how to go about doing that so that it will not be detected. I was thinking about an answering machine, but that may not work either. Please help. Thanks.

Just a word of advice it is illegal to record a telephone conversation without consent from both parties. Hence why when you call a call center they say this call may be recorded. Phone recorders have to alert both parties by sending a audible beep once every so often.

You should be able to buy a small mic device from Radio Shack that you stick on the phone handset.  It will plug into almost any recorder.  Check and make sure it works before depending on it to record this scammer.
