yes you can if you friend in the usa has cignular phone service or AT&T..however if they have sprint or Verizon they will not because the don't use the same technologies, ( GSM ) no sim card no text either way. but it take some time t  reach , some time can take up to hours it really depend s on the service and  you local Carrier, also from syria you need to have a number such as 94 and not 93 number. i am not sure why but that the way it works
