  1. You create your own petition by writing the purpose on top (as a header) and then have everyone on the street involved (and hopefully others) sign it.  Take the petition to the next town/community meeting or directly to the court house.  People won't listen unless you make a lot of noise.  I would suggest speed bumps before speed cameras though.  Cheaper, easier to implement, and the local authorities don't have to worry about people bitching about big brother issues.  Good luck

  2. Just like in the U.S. you will have to have a signed petition with at least two thirds or better of the people that live in that area to present to your city manager and then they will do a study and sometime after 6 months to two years they will get back to you and say that it is not in their budget at this time.

You should also take as many pictures of this section of road so that they do not change anything, report any and all traffic violators and keep doing this and just maybe they will reverse their decision, good luck.....

  3. Start by getting support from your local Community Police Officer and local Council - physically draw up a petition and take it round the neighbourhood and get it signed. Copies in local shops is good too - and in local schools.  Good luck.

  4. So why do you want to spoil it for motorists or especially motorcyclists - in Cornwall we set fire to the d**n things.

If you don't like it Live Somewhere else.

  5. This depends on a lot of factors,

Who will pay for it>?  Does your town have money for this?

    What do the police think?

What type of local government do you have?  Small town or big city?

You may be "spitting in the wind".

Unfortunately, until someone is hurt or killed, nothing will change soon.

You can start with a petition - write the request down and phrase it-

"we the undersigned homeowners and tenants request research to consider the feasibility of speed bumps, or surveillance camera at the following location______ for purposes of slowing traffic, or whatever."

However, a surveillance camera might breach rights of privacy depending on where it is located.

Since you say there is a school nearby, that is your ace in the hole.  Get the school principal and school board involved. Is it an election year in your town ?

Good luck. But you might only tick off your neightbors, police, firemen, and the mayor.

  6. Strange but true, who do you think the majority of people are that will be caught by these "residential" camera's that you so badly yearn for ?   It will be you, your family and your neighbours, and that my friend is a fact !

  7. Highway safety doesn't bother to do anything until there is a fatal ity.  Call the mayors office and explain the situation. Then get parents to sign a petition. You will have to collect the signatures and then present them.

  8. Why would you want to do that? I live in a community that has used speed cameras. The only thing that they are good for is as a form of income for the city. Cars do not slow down like they do with a police presence. And the camera clicking a picture of a speeding car does not slow that car down at the time when he's speeding, and causing the safety violation.  The owner of the car simply gets a ticket in the mail about 2 weeks later. If your really worried about speeding in the area, Petition the city government to increase police presence there, That way anyone speeding will be slowed down on the spot. Thus doing what speed limit laws were created for.

I realize that there is an argument that eventually it will cause drivers to slow down in the area, but from my personal experience, it just doesn't work.

Also in my area, there was a major court battle that was won by a group of ticketed offenders, forcing the city to pay back all of the revenue that it in cured from these cameras, to the violators. The lawsuit claimed that the cameras were unconstitutional, Since in America we are presumed innocent until proven guilty, And that a very temperamental machine was the only obtainable witness to the violation.
