How do i set messages in yahoo groups to default to newest when i open the group?

Sorry, there is no option to to do that.  When you sign in to your group and click on Messages on left side of page, you can sort messages to show the newest message first by clicking on "Sort by date" located on the far right just above the first message.  When you sign out, that sort arrangement will automatically default back to the way it was.
