  1. assign a static ip for you wireless network adapter of yur laptop in the same range of other pc. assign the same gateway for both. try then

  2. First of all is your laptop and desktop is in same ip block? If so then give them in the same workgroup (go to properties of my computer then computer name and change). Now ping from one pc to another. If ping replies come then both will be in your home network.

  3. dont need to worry about ip addresses.  your router should be set to use dhcp.  that means it will issue ip addresses automatically.

make sure your computers are in the same workgroup, e.g. rename it and make sure the name is the same.  reboot pc and then right hand mouse click on the folders you want, click on share and then the other pc should be able to see it.
