  1. First poster right, no digitial audio. You want a sound system that includes at least two "optical" input or "coaxial" input. Optical preferred.

Check Yamaha, honestly HTiB are c**p, don't get me wrong, for the price they are nice, I run a couple thousand dollar home theatre and (now I'm broke so...) still run a $250 HTiB. Look at Yamaha, Sony went out of style when it came to home-theatre AUDIO personally. My yamaha, granted no built in DVD but those are CHEAP these days, was $250 like 4 or 5 years ago. Includes all the digital AUDIO hookups needed (no digital video, which is okay).

Optimally you want to run HDMI for anything video, so you are going to want a screen that will accept at least one, preferably 2+ HDMI. Component is still great quality (as is DVI, and VGA, but less commonly used) so you want that as well. PS3 is HDMI stock IIRC. Honestly I'd use the PS3 as a DVD player actually, and get a HTiB without DVD (for upscale you NEED a digital connection, HDMI, VGA, or DVI as component cannot carry the digital signature needed for upconversion).

All that being said... Go with whatever TV you want. Use the PS3 as a blu ray AND standard DVD player. And get a HTiB that includes a TRUE receiver. Speakers are going to hook up with boring speaker wire - not some fancy plug - and this means a couple things. It is probably going to be higher quality than a DVD type system. It is going to let you upgrade- though your not going to build a great system out of it minor upgrades and speaker replacements are EASY and SIMPLE, and you are more likely to get the inputs/outputs you need.

  2. I concur with the previous answerers!

HDMI is the best way to transport a signal in 2008.

    The TV is there

    The BD (bluraydisc) is there

The HTiB (home theater in a box) is seriously lacking. It outputs HDMI but it has no HDMI inputs for PS3 or for cable/satellite. Dumb? Yes, but I guess it fits a price range.

You would do much better with separate componets for your sound system, but if you can find an HTiB with two HDMI inputs and one output, that would work correctly.

In my opinion, you will be seriously deficient if you buy that Sony piece!

  3. That system will not work with what you want.  The HTiB you selected has no digital inputs.  You wont be enjoying surround sound from your PS3 or cable.  You need a receiver that can at the very least accomodate digital inputs (toslink or coaxial or HDMI) to enjoy your system.
