if i have a long quote, but i only need a section, can i use [...] ?

and also, i know that you put the period after the citation. what if it's like a question mark or something else, would i still put it after the citation?

ex: "The dog ran" (Someone 3).

now would i do the same to this? ---> "The dog ran" (Someone 3)?

it looks a little awkward to me.

  1. In any quote, long or short, you use just the relervant part, and you  use "  ".

If  the quote is a question, then  ? goes at its end, inside the "  ?".  ( Someone 3)

If you wanted to avoid the issue altogether, you could say,

Someone 3 asked if the dog had run.

    Good luck.

  2. Rule # 1. Never paraphrase a quotation.

Rule # 2. Yes, you may leave peices out and chose to put in only the pieces that are relevant to your point.

Rule # 3. use lead in "... and leading out ... " to indicate that this is the relevant piece that was picked out of the quote.

Rule # 4, If the quote begins at the start or the end of a sentence then you do not need the three " ... or ... "

Yes: "if i have a long quote, but i only need a section, can i use [...] ?"

Yes, you must include the "?" at the end of the citation if it is part fo the citation.

Using your own example: " ... would i still put it after the citation?" Absolutely just a I just did.

If the citation is not itself a question then no question mark is permited inside the ("). If the citation however is then used to contruct an interrogatory question, the (?) is placed outside the quotation.

  3. If the quote is a question or if the sentence containing the quote as a whole is a question then you would use a question mark.

Ex: In x-book the main character asked "did the dog run?" (here the q-mark goes inside the quote marks)

Ex: What was the significance of Tyra's quote "he left the door while markings were here"?  (here, the q-mark goes outside the quote)

  4. Quotations are made to be short and easy to remember but if you have long,im sorry it might be a short parable. Use appropriate words,  I think that would help.
