How do i show my avatar on public

I have chosen put avatar but it this shadow thing tht comes to when i answer a question i just want my avatar on da screen plz help

Sometimes there are delays in avatars showing on the site. The gray unisex icon will show as your picture in the meantime. A good reason for delay right now is the updating that Y/A announced on the front page. They said that you should expect odd behavior on the site, so please be patient.
