i have a small flower garden in front of my house about 8 feet long and 7 feet wide. i was wondering if i could put a small water garden in it. i have tried reading some things about it on the web but everything reads like a foreign language and between that and my 2 year old bugging me every two seconds, its kind of hard to concentrate on a long article anyway. i just need to know how to get started.

  1. You need something to hold water.  Like a half-whiskey barrel, or a pre-formed pond liner, or an old bathtub, or just dig a hole and lay flexible pond liner in it.

Once you have your thing that holds water, put some water plants in it (usually available in late spring at your local garden center or pond supply store).

Add some minnows if you like (cheaply acquired at a bait store), or toss in a piece of a "mosquito dunk" which will keep the the mosquitoes from breeding.  (Minnows or fish will do the same thing - as they will eat any larvae that hatch.)

It's not rocket science.  You don't even need to have a pump if you aren't trying to raise Koi or other big expensive fish.

    I've had a small still-water pond for 20 years.
