I just noticed a scar on the side of his mouth and suspect it's from him biting them so much. How do i get him to stop!

  1. Hamsters chew on their cage bars because they want out, they are bored or they have the need to chew. hamsters teeth are always growing, so they need something good to chew on. You can try to buy flavoured chew toy, gnawing logs, etc, but if they don't stop, there is not much else you can do other than buy a cage with no bars like an aquarium. Chewing on the bars is not that bad for them, the paint is made non-toxic, as most hamsters will chew on the bars at one point. If your hamster is has lots of tubes or things to climb on or explore, they should not be bored. Try putting a toliet paper tube in their cage, they can chew on that AND play in it.

  2. Biting on the bars is natural. My hamster did this aswell. The reason they do that is to ware down there teeth. All you have to do is give him/her more things to chew on...if that doesn't work sell your cage on ebay and get an aquarium tank.

  3. I tried everything and mine wouldn't stop either so I put them all in bin cages with lots of things to chew.  I don't think some hamsters can be stopped.  Switch cages.

  4. well i had a hammy that just wanted to b played with.. play ith it for 30 min a night and it should stop =] all it wants is atention

  5. get himn an aquarium tank.

no other way, hamsters automatically chew the bars.  also you could probably line the cage with somethign too thick for him to chew

  6. I suggest giving him something else to chew on, such as a doggie biscuit, or just get a solid cage. I recommend bin or aquarium cages. Read more about hamster cages on my site. Hamsters always want to chew on the bars of those cages.

  7. give him a treat or fruits to distract him

  8. You're right to be concerned about this behaviour, because despite popular mythology it actually IS dangerous for your pet. Read about concerns at http://www.hamsterific.com/CageBarChewin...

Switch him to a bin cage - no bars, safe, escape proof, more room so your hamster won't want to escape, easy to clean, easier to interact with pet, economical - http://images.google.com/images?sourceid...
