  1. you have to paddle a lot harder for waves (which you've probably already noticed)

stand up as quickly as you can, the speed you get going from the top of the wave to the first bottom turn will help you not bog (sink) and wobble. i was so frustrated switching from long to short boarding. my boyfriend had given me his old short board he outgrew, so i didn't want to let him down and kept trying, and finally mastered it. once you get the hang of it you start improving pretty quickly.

  2. i would try to surf on a fish. it is a small fat shortboard. it has easy pop ups smoth turn and easy paddling. is used to be ok at shortboards then i tried a fish and it tought me how to turn really good.

and know i can cut back, floater, spray snap, carve, you name it

  3. But, let's be honest, it takes a LONG time to learn to surf. It may take several days of lessons from an instructor to help you out (in spite of the fact that you were already doing okay on a long board). And think about it, one session a week isn't very much time in the water.I started in 1966, and it took me a whole summer to get 'decent' and I didn't really get 'good' until well into my second summer. And I had been swimming, body surfing and body boarding for years before I started to surf. And I surfed just about every single day!

Just don't give up, and look at it as having fun, whether you ride worth a d**n or not. The pressure and frustration will only make you surf worse, not better. This is FUN, so what is the worst that happens? You fall in the water? Stick with it, ask your pals or family for some help if you can't find (or afford) an instructor/coach, and laugh a lot when you fall (You aren't in a competition, right?). I spent my whole first summer just getting 'decent', and I really couldn't say I was 'good' well into my second summer. And you know what, some of my friends became super excellent, and others always kind of stunk. But we all had fun. Surfing has been 42 years worth of fun for me. Stay at it, and smile!

  4. well mybe your too big for your board if thats a possibility
