How do i take care of a redwood?

Just recently, the natural science guys at UC Berkeley gave me a wee little redwood, about 5 inches tall from the base. I need advice on how to take care of it, I don't want it to die. It has already suffered 4 hours of Berkeley heat before i could finally get home. Currently, it is not planted yet...How do i take care of it?

My back yard is kind of a dry place. Im thinking on taking care of the redwood in a clay pot for a while, and sum place, and when its finally big enough, i think i have to give it to a national or state forest service, or some organization.My friends are boyscouts. They called me the tree's father lol, so i guess im like his adoptive father...Jonathan Kent :)

I grew some potatoes in my back yard when i was in 2nd grade, and managed to get to a 2nd generation, i think, before i ate them...
