  1. Houseplant or outdoors? What kind? Cinnamon? Ostrich? All prefer well-draining, acidic soil. Most ferns like a humid shaded environment. Lots of filtered sunlight or early morning and late afternoon direct light will produce a strong and colorful plant. Dry atmosphere and dry heat will make the delicate fronds wither and die.

Ostrich ferns will grow tall and spread out (underground) over a wide space so beware. It took years but mine pop up in the most unexpected places and appear to be unstoppable. My cinnamon ferns are more attractive with the cinnamon-colored fronds. These fertile fronds are covered with abundant masses of brownish sporangia and die back after shedding their spores in late summer. They have a moderate growth rate.

  2. plenty of shade. direct sunlight will kill em.
