How do i take the file extension off the file name?

Ive noticed that recently my files are now called "Filename.mp3" or "filename.jpg" rather than just "filename"

is there any way to undo this?

or have i just never noticed that this is what its always been like?

  1. Hi!

    You cannot completely remove the filename extension because if you do then windows won't know how to handle the file. But what you can do is follow these steps to make it invisible and so files will look as if they don't have it on the end.

    1) Open up "My Computer"

    2) Go Tools > Folder Options...

    3) Click the "View" tab

    4) Make sure the box next to "Hide extensions for known file types" has a tick in it

    5) Click "Apply" and "OK"


  2. It's always been like that, but you may have set your file display options not to show them. Don't remove the "extension" otherwise you won't be able to open the files.

  3. you can't just remove it or the file wont open with the correct program

    You need to hide the file extension instead, for some reason you have changed the setting to show them

    go to control panel, folder options, view tab, under advance settings put the tick in "hide extensions for known file types"
