  1. They sell cases to convert from internal to external, the conectors are diferents and their settings, un internal use sata conectors and power suply, externals use any plug in port you has out in your PC, the good thing about externals is you can take to any other PC and use and copy, and format(erased) if you want and also if you buy a HUB selfpowered(electrical) you can use as a boot device and any PC.

  2. Your HD is most likely a SATA drive, compared to an older IDE drive.  The two aren't interchangeable.  You'd need to make sure HD and computer are compatible.  To install a HD you need 3 things in your computer.  An extra power, extra SATA cable (or IDE if this is the type) and a place to mount the HD.  Then set the jumpers to slave, if this is a second HD on the same port.  You don't need to install any hardware as the computer will automatically recognize it.  The HD might need formatting though.

Before unplugging stuff, better get a friend that knows what they're doing to help you out.  You can easily damage or short something in your computer and this can be costly.

  3. Since you don't know how to describe this, can you supply the make/model of the PC and the external HD?
