I bought a little red-eyed Argente dwarf hamster from a breeder (an inexperienced one) and first time i picked it up, it bit me. I try to tame it and cool it down but its aggressive. Is there any tips or ways of how u can make them obedient? Its about a month old.

  1. Okay.

Day one- Give hi msome treats through the bars of the cage, but don't let go. Make him eat it through your fingers.

    Day two- Repeat day one.

Day three- Place your hand flat in the cage, with a treat near your wrist. If you put it on your fingetips, he'll just snatch it and run away.

Day four to six- repeat day three.

Day seven- If the hamster feels comfortable, lift him up a bit of the ground. Let him hop off.

    Day eight- Lift him higher.

Day nine- Hold him for at least 20 seconds before setting him down.

Day ten- By now he should be comfortable with you.

*END NOTES- They can't see well, so always say his name when you approach him. Rinse your hand before and after handling, so he doesn't think you're food and nip and so you don't get sick.

  2. Well, you aren't going to make it "obedient" but you can take steps to help it trust you.  The breeder may  not have handled the hamster enough when it was a pup and it's not used to people.  If you have just brought the hamster home give it two to three days to settle into his new home.

Once he is settled in start by leaving your hand in the cage a little bit each day so your hamster gets used to your scent.  Talk to him so he gets to know your voice.  After a few days of leaving your hand still in the cage start to give him treats or any kind of food from your hand.  That helps to earn trust.

Don't keep trying to pick him up.  Let him come into your hand.  The more you try to scoop him up when he doesn't know you well enough yet the more he won't trust you.  Don't chase him around the cage either.

Your hamster is biting because he is afraid of you.  If you have handled food recently and your hamster smells the food he may bite for that reason too.

It may take some time and patience but you should be able to earn your hamsters trust.  Good luck.
