  1. If the Plastron or Belly Shell is incurved, it's a male. If it's flat or outcurved, it's a female. Male tails are long and slender. Female tails are short and wide. The shell is usually the best way to tell the difference.

*When the turtle is just born, it will be difficult to tell what gender it is

  4. Most of the methods suggested work only for a few species of turtle. There is no safe way to determine the s*x of an immature turtle, although it won't hurt to guess. After all, the odds are 50:50. Once you think that the turtle is sexually mature, look at the tail from underneath and find the vent. If the vent is underneath the upper shell (carapace) when the tail is held straight back, you have either a female or an immature male. If the vent is beyond the carapace, you have a mature male.

  5. Probably the best way for sure is the position of the cloaca (a**s)  in relation the body or tip of the tail.

The male's is closer to the tip of the tail than to the body.  The female's is closer to the body.  This can probably be detemined at a younger age or smaller size than the other methods of sexing.

  6. You will have to wait until they are at least 3 or 4 years old to s*x the turtles. The long claws in males usually start to become noticeable by then.

  7. Look at the claws males' have longer ones and they tend to have longer tails too

also the bottoms of the males shell is normally con-caved

    hope this helps

  8. Male turtles often have fatter and longer tails than the female gd luck x

  9. Look at the claws. Male turtles have longer front claws. Females have shorter ones.

Look at the tail. Males have thicker and longer tails. Female turtle tails are shorter and not as fat.

Look at the bottom shell. A male turtle has a curved shell on the bottom. A female's bottom shell is flatter or may even protrude outward if it's mature enough.

  10. it has to do with the shape of the shell, but i forgot what.

  11. females have short skinny tails and short claws, males have long stubby tails and long claws.

even though this site specifies for a res, sexing maps, painted turtles, and soft shells will be the same as sexing res.

  12. If the bottom shell is flat, it's a male.
