How do i tell when potatoes ready to be dug up?

  2. The "old boy" way down the allotment is wait for the plant to flower then die down.  At this point, the potatoes underneath won't grow any bigger and are ready to come up.

    Of course, they won't come to any harm staying in the ground so dig up only what you need for your meal(s for the week) and leave the rest in.

  3. You can dig in from the side of one plant to check size.  If they are as big as you want, then they can be dug.  Depending on how much you planted, you can get a few at a time to use and dig as needed.  Should keep an eye on size and not allow to get too big.  They will stop growing and put out root runners.   At that point, they are really close to being past use.
