How do i test a 12 inch sub.?

Question

my friend is trying to sell me 2 12 inch punch subs for $20, how do i test them to see if they work? i dont think he will burn me but i dont wanna waste my good ole dub on something that dont work.

Subway?  This is a car audio forum.

Seriously, aside from the previous suggestions, also use your sense of smell too.  A blown sub will also smell burnt ... there's no hiding it.  I've come across people that have done it on-purpose and it has a distinctive smell.

only way i know of is to hook em up

Very simple. Drop into a box (not fastened) and tap an amp. Just push down while checking them so that they don't rattle. If they sound garbled, I would probably pass them up.

easiest way would be by pushing the cone of the subwoofer down. if it moves very smooth... that means the coils are good.

but if it either, makes a scratchy sound, is very hard to move, or doesnt move at all.. that means the coil(s) are messed up.

they can either be blown or melted.
