  1. The first thing to do is to check the rear brake system!

A handbrake that does not have enough handle to get the emergency brakes to apply could indicate a more serious problem. Such as worn brake lines (or shoes) that need replaced, and/or a brake drum (or rotor) that has reached the end of its service life.

If could just be that you have not used your brakes enough when backing up to keep them in adjustment. At this point a manual adjustment would be in order.

If you have a mechanic you can trust, have him check out your brakes, because if the rears need done,  the fronts need work too.

  2. There may be a small bolt under your handbrake inside the car that you can adjust

  3. the adjustment for the cable is under the gaiter around the handbrake lever.

however the most common cause for a long handbrake on fiestas is the "self adjusters" for the rear brakes seize up.

if you are able remove the brake drums and inspect the brake system, if you are not happy to do this most garages will check the brakes on the car for around 30 pounds.
