  1. If you purchased your unit and it had an older version of maps than were available for sale at the time, you can get a free map update.  Otherwise, you have to pay up.

  2. As long as your NEW Garmin unit you have purchased is within 30 days of New maps being released, I think you have a good chance to get a free map DVD sent to you.

This does not apply to people who purchased the Garmin Newly Overhauled units (refurbished), you get maps of what they ship you but normally they are ship with the latest mapping software 2009 already pre-loaded in the units.

Starting in a few months from now, Garmin will offer free maps upgrade if you purchased a NEW Garmin GPS unit within 60 days of purchase, they call it NuMap and this will protect any Garmin customer who purchased a NEW Garmin unit that did not include the latest 2009 mapping software for 60 days.

There are NO free Garmin update mapping software available online, you need to have an authorization code with the software to install the new mapping software, so you might try eBay /craigslist or something to see if you can buy one cheaper.

If  you are considering buying map updates for your Garmin GPS system, Auto Nav 2000 Plus, Inc offer a full line of map update software for your Garmin GPS system.
