  1. That can be difficult. As many will know, ast names here can tend to be pretty monotomous. In a classroom with 30 people, you'l always find someone with the surname: Gonazlez, Perez, Hernandez, Mendez, Martinez, Gutierrez, etc...

Part of the issue here is that when the spaniards came and conquered and became a sort of feudal lord, the indians that were ruled by each lord took that man's surname. It's unusual to find people with indian sounding last names (though more common in villages than major cities).

Birth records can be pretty messy here if you're tracing people from small villages in the middle of nowhere that has no prosperity. Even today there's kids being born in these sort of places that will probably never get a birth certificate. Tracing ancestors isn't exactly a hobby here either.

It could become more easy if you knew exactly which town your ancestors are from, but up to there you'll probably end up at a dead end if there's no records available.

Tracing ancestors of spanish descent might be easier though, especially if the surname is highly unusual like an unusual Basque name for instance.
