If i want to add another mile or 2 how can I track how far I've ran? Treadmills tell you how far you've ran and I'm not going to jump in my car to clock an additional 2 miles. is there a device i can wear that'll tell me?

  1. You can do a possiblity of things:

    -Use the internet.

Use a map online that can tell you distance and plan your run (www.mapmyrun.com)

    -Wear GPS.

Wear a device that can tell you how far you have went. Say your running 3 miles, go one way 1.5 miles, stop then turn around. Timex Triatholan GPS system ($150.00)

  2. you can do two things. go on map quest and mesure out the distance you want to run anywhere in your nieghborhood and then run it. can buy this wheel on a stick from menards what it does is you can set it to any type of distance: meters miles yards feet... etc use it to mesure out the distance you want and run it its like 10-20$. good luck running

  3. on runnersworld.com there is a map on the computer, you just look for the road you run on and make the map read the path you run then it tells you how far it is.

  4. pedometer and then set it to your stride

they are fairly inexpensive in walmart or any sports store

  5. Unless you are running for a specific racing goal (like training for a 10k or something) then miles don't mean squat. What matters first is time - running 1/2 and hour, 45 minutes, an hour. If you can cover more distance in a 1/2 an hour than you did a week ago, then you are improving and that is all that matters.

But, since you asked, distances for road races are usually measured on a bicycle with a calibrated odometer.

Personally, I use one of the google maps based web sites like mapmyrun.com

  6. There is also the nike+ device that you put in your shoe and attach to your Ipod if you have one. It'll track the distance, time, and your pace of your run.  I have one of those. It'd be great other sneaker brands and mp3 players had access to the patent.

  7. There are several ways that you could measure the distance that you're covering. One way, the most common suggestion, would be to get a pedometer from a local sports store. That might work, but not for everybody, as some aren't 100% accurate. Another way to do it would be to measure the distance with your car. That way is pretty accurate, but there is one other way I know of that could do it, and it's probably the easiest. You could measure it on:

    http://www.geodistance.com/

That can measure it probably most simply and more accurately than most pedometers would. To use Geocites, you simply need to zoom in with the scale on the left to where you're trying to measure, or you can use the "Jump to Location" on the top right, and put in the location where you plan to measure. You normally would still need to zoom in more. Once you have found your location, you need to click your starting place, and then click along your route for the red line to follow it and measure your distance. It can also help to change it to to satellite instead of map, as it shows much more things, such as the trees, houses, and such, so that you can be more accurate with your start and finish.

Most of these ways fortunately don't really require you to spend money :).

  8. There are a lot of devices. Be prepared to spend $200 or more if you want an accurate measurement.  $25 pedometers are incedibly inaccurate and not worth the money.

Probably the most popular is the Garmin 205 or 305.  See http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000CSQ...

The 205 is gps based distance.  It does not only speed and distance but allows you to see where you have run.  There are numerous websites where you can upload the workout and put it on a  map. The 305 adds heart rate monitoring.  The only downside of these is that they are a little big. At  big marathons you see a lot of runners with these.

Alternates to the Garmin are the Polar r200sd, rs400sd and rs800sd.  These watches do both speed and distance and heart rate.  The Polar watches don't have the mapping feature but I personally like the workout software more than Garmins. But you can go wrong with either Garmin or Polar.

The less expensive alternate is to map your course before  or after you run using an online tool.  See http://www.mapmyrun.com/ but there are other sites.  Just google for mapping a run.

Another way to save money is to log minutes run instead of miles.  This is actually a better way to measure training for most people.
