The best thing you can do is cancel it because there are more chances that someone has your phone and they might end up making long distance phone calls and your going to have to end up paying for it.

Absolutely you need to have it turned off because you are responsible for any calls on it until you report it missing! Your provider may be able to see if the ESN/IMEI/Serial number has been used.
