  1. Sirius Puppy Training is your answer.  The benefits of this six week course (you attend 1 hour per week) are too many to list here but biting and mouthing are well taken care of.  It's listed in the white or yellow pages of your phone directory as either Sirius Dog Training or Sirius Puppy Training.  You will love these classes, your puppy will love learning and I just can't say enough good things about them!  Please don't miss this opportunity.  The classes are for puppies 12 weeks old at the first class.

  2. She is probably playing right now, but the best way to stop her from doing it is to use a loud sound like AH AH! and stop touching her till she settles down. This shows her that mouthing is not appreciated, and results in her not getting attention.

  3. The puppy sees your hand like a toy. For now, do not use any force to correct the puppy. This is a very common mistake that makes irreversible damage towards a young pup.

What I like to do is transfer this prey drive towards something more appropiate such as a ball on a string. Later on, you can use this ball as a training device. As sometimes, adult rotties lack food drive to be motivated enough with treats.

So next time she starts biting you, say in a firm voice "NO! You will not do that!", you can also slam a rolled up magazine against a wall to startle her. Immediately afterwards show the toy.

  4. I have a pit and I had the same concern -- how hard he would be able to bite when he was grown. Dogs will always use their teeth, but bite inhibition training conditions them to control the force with which they bite. It is not merely a disciplinary measure.  I used the following technique.  Just be consistent, continue it throughout her growing months.

"...The next time your puppy bites you, scream "OW!" in a high-pitched voice. Exaggerate a little. Then refuse to play with him or pay attention to him for a few minutes..."
