  1. One of my best friends is a trainer. She deals specifically with troubled dogs like runaways.

Starting young is a great idea. You need a lot of cooked chicken, though.

Hold some chicken in front of your dogs nose and say "Come!" . Give her the chicken. Do that repeatedly until when you say "Come!" she looks at you waiting for the chicken. You can use a clicker and click&treat after you say come, too.

After a bit, take a step back, say "Come!" and wait for her to come to you, then give her the chicken. Keep taking small steps until she comes on the command.

Eventually, you can start taking smaller steps back, and progress onto letting her outside without a leash in a fenced-in area. DO NOT do this fast - it will cause MANY loopholes in the training.

If you've done it correctly, your dog should come to you whenever you say "Come!" You can, of course, use your own word, but that's the one I use. Soon you'll be able to go out without a leash or to a large, fenced in field. Just remember to take it slow. When she's got it 100% down in the house, you can move to the yard.

Good luck on training! I wish you and your new pup a happy future. :)

  2. Well, one reason dogs run away is because they don't get enough exercise. Try walking him or her like once or twice a day. :)

  3. We live in the country, and have found that the best way to do this is to ignore the fact that they run away.  Eventually, they learn that the neighbor's property is just as boring as ours is (luckily we have VERY tolerant neighbors), and they stay close to home.  We just got a newfoundland puppy that ran away constantly from it's previous home, and after about a week of us just ignoring it, the problem went away on its own.

If you live in the city, then I advise getting a shock collar for the puppy.  Get one with a 'bad tone' button.  Whenever the puppy ventures outside your yard, first press the bad tone button, then give him/her a low-level shock.  This teaches the puppy what the bad tone button means, and not to venture outside your yard.

    Good luck!

  4. First off, you shouldn't get a puppy under 8 weeks of age.  5 weeks is too young.

Second, the way you train it to not run away is to not give it opportunities to.  Don't leave him outside by himself.  When he is outside if you don't have a fenced yard, keep it on a leash.  If you are a responsible owner, there is no reason why your dog should be able to run aay.
