My second son, who is 7 yrs old this year has been having problems waking himself up to go to the toilet to ease himself till now. He is even unable to wake up when he has already wet his bed! We have always had to change the bedsheets everyweek if we forget to wake him up to go potty. At this point, we get him to go before he goes to bed, and we will have to wake him up and about 3am. Sometimes, he will already have wet the bed before then! Also, he takes extremely long time to fall asleep and it is extremely hard to get him to wake up once he sleeps. When he does wake up, he just doesnt know what is going on, what to do, where he needs to go... etc. As a result, we have had to guide him to the toilet and he still wouldnt know what he is supposed to do. During these times, he is also unable to answer any questions asked to him. The next morning, he will have totally no recollection of what happened the night before. Can someone tell me why this is happening to him and what we can do?

  1. Contact your pediatrician. It could be a number of things but it still needs to be addressed. At his age, this should not be a concern. No only that but when he gets invited to sleepovers he will be embarrassed to go b/c of his bed wetting problem.

    Just see his doctor!

  2. ok girl i got this one. i have a 10yr old and he is e real heavy sleeper. i had the same issue as u. i stopped giving him fluids after 7pm. i had him go potty rite before he went to bed and then again before i went to bed. it has worked well. the only time he has an accident is if he doesnt stick to the routine set up for him. so if he is at grandmas for the wknd or he sneaks into the fridge after 7pm and i dont know it. u may also try getting ur son set up with a urologist just to see if there is sumthing else that can be done. my stepsister peed the bed til she was 16 and my stepmom go to a specialist that gave her sum meds that she took by a nasal spray and it seemed to help. best of luck to u!!

  3. He's a deep sleeper. Try cutting back on how much he has to drink in the evening, and let him sleep a half hour later (later potty time before bed). Then, see if he's holding till morning...if not, contact your pediatrician and see if there might be a problem.

  4. Its part of being a parent, I too had a bed wetting problem when I was that young.

My parents limited the liquid I drank to a small sip of water after dinner, and they would wake me up in the middle of the night and lead me to the bathroom....I too didn't know what was going on or remember it the next morning but at least I didn't wet the bed.

If you find him going before 3am....wake him up at 12.  Eventually he will grow out of it, but for a while he might not.  Be patient because its not his fault.

Until he figures it out you must wake him up and do what you have been doing.

But also tell his doctor at his next check up, I know that there is a spray that you can give children orally to make them not wet the bed....Ive had to give it to a few children that I have nannied for before they go to bed

  5. I would ask the doctor about it next time he goes in. I used to babysit a little boy that had a problem like this that was caused by a lack of a certain hormone. The doctor prescribed some medicine and eased him off of it, after a while he could hold it all night or wake on his own to go.

Try setting an alarm clock in his room with a note next to it that it's time to use the bathroom....see if this will help him go on his own, but wake up just in case it doesn't wake him.
