  1. is it an hg-10 harddrive cam

you need to use the coral menu or the backup cd that came with the camara you turn the camara on plug in the power cord plug in the usb cable and change the mode switch to view your computer will find the camara as a mass storage device and if you have installed the coral software it will open click the download from camara button and the transfer button light on the top of the camara will light up push the button and that is all there is to it

  2. You transfer it via a USB cable, or a Firewire cable. Most mini dv cams are equipped with one or both. It then depends on which editing software you are using. Most of the consumer editing programs let you capture footage to your computer using either, or USB. Editing programs will allow you to connect your camera, and capture your footage. I know for PC users, Pinnacle:

    http://www.pinnaclesys.com/PublicSite/us...

sells some decent priced editing software that will allow you to do what you want, plus more.

  3. WHICH Canon camcorder?

If it is a miniDV tape based camcorder, video transfer using USB will not work. You need to use a firewire cable to connect the DV port on the camcorder to the firewire400 port on your computer. When you connect the camcorder to your computer, the camcorder needs to be in "Play/Edit" mode. Firewire, IEEE1394a and i.Link are all the same thing. If your computer does not have a firewire port, they are generally cheap - and easy to install.

If it is a hard drive or flash memory based camcorder, that should mount like any other external mass storage device on your desktop. Open "My Computer" and look for the drive. Copy the files to the hard drive. Drag and drop the files into your video editor.

If the camcorder is DVD based, NEVER put a mini-DVD in a slot loading optical drive. You either need to get a drawer loading DVD drive (I like the ones from LaCie) and use a DVD ripper like Handbrake

    or

You will use the AV cables - to connect to an "analog/digital bridge" (like those from Canopus). The DVD camcorder connects to the A/D bridge with the AV cable that came in the box with the camcorder and the A/D bridge connects to your computer with a firewire cable. If your computer has only USB, you can try the Pinnacle Dazzle converters.
