  1. There are 2 things here: subtitles, and captions.

Subtitles come from your DVD player.  You turn them on and off at the DVD player.

Captions come from the TV, and you turn them on and off with the TV remote.

If you are seeing these subtitles only when you watch a DVD, and not when you watch "regular" TV, then you need to check your DVD player instructions on turning titles on and off.  Sometimes there is also an option in the base menu for a movie that turns different titles on and off, as well.

If you see the subtitles when you watch "regular" TV, then you're seeing captions.  Your remote should have a button labelled ""CC" or "CAP" or something like that.  Press it a few times and see what happens.  You will either see an option like "off", or you will have to find an inactive title channel (like CC4).

If you use a digital box, some of those can also put captions on your screen.  Check the instructions for your digital box.
