How do i use cross over cable and setting up network.?

I have 2 destop (Hp & Emachine) and i want to play game using lan without ethernet. I plugged cross over cable into each of the ethernet port, and in the thingy its say limited or no connectivity. Can someone tell me step by step cuz i've read answer in here but it dont do no good cuz iono wat they saying.

It is much easier if you just connect them to a router with two regular cables. The router assigns IP addreses automatically.

If you want to just connect them point to point, you need to go network settings of each PC and assign each one of them a unique IP
