How do i use my cell phone in spain to call the states?

i have an unlocked quadband phone and i just purchased a Happy Movil phone card in Madrid. I can use the phone to call others in Spain without problem but everytime i try to call back to the states i have problems. I've tried dialing 1 area code and number, 00 1 area code and number, +00 1 area code and number, what is the correct way to call?

Is there a number on the Happy Movil card for customer service?  I would try contacting them to see if it allows for international calls. It might be restricted.

You´re doing the right thing by dialing 001, but it could be that the happy card does not give enough minutes to call the u.s .. Try buying a phone card like Europe Best or Europa Direct, Eurousa at any cybercafe..  they usually cost either 5 or 6 euros.. I use them to call home , ( I´m from Chicago) and it gives me about 600 minutes per card.. Not bad.. ( they last 45-60 days)...
