Alright, I have the Sony DAVHDX277WC theater system and i cant get it to work with all of my electronics. I have hooked up the DVD player that came with it to the speakers and the surround sound only works for DVD s. I would REALLY appreciate it if someone could tell me how I can get the surround sound to work for everything.

  1. Your surround sound will normally work for digital sources such as your DVD player. For analog sources such as video games try to select Dolby 5.1 for processing of analog signal to digital. Also see if there is an option in the sound set up to output pcm

  2. Not all electronics output surround sound. And a home theatre system cannot simply magically create 5.1 channels of sound from a 2 channel stereo source. That would be like me asking you to spell the word 'cat' using only the letter 'c'. Can't be done, makes no sense.

What you CAN do, is emulate surround sound. This is done one of two ways:

    1) have the receiver guess which sounds should go in which channels. This is proper surround sound emulation. Dolby Pro Logic is one technology which does exactly this.

    2) Have the receive use audio matrix mode. What this does is basically take your stereo sound and retransmit it to the surround speakers. Ie the left stereo channel is copied to the back left surround speaker, right stereo channel copied to right surround speaker, and any audio in both channels is directed simultaneously to both the front centre and (if you have one) back centre speaker. And of course any audio below a certain frequency is sent to the woofer.

  3.       You need to buy a receiver if there are no audio inputs on the back of your theater system.
