you can use the shift key in three ways that i know of, the first way it that  if you hold the shift key down and press a letter it activates a temporary cap lock , second if you hold the shift key and press a number at the top of your keyboard it will enter the symbol that you see above the number, last if you highlight text and miss a letter, word or sentence, you can hold the shift key and keep the highlighted text plus but hold the shift key and pressing the arrow i the direction you want to highlight it will highlight the rest of  what you want
